How can I control a power outlet via computer software?

I have a 1-wire temperature monitoring network and would like to have software control the fans around the house. I can do the software end of it no problem but my problem is this:
How can I control a power outlet from the computer?
use an intelligent Power distribution Unit(PDU) that can be connected to a computer through a RJ45 connetor cable. the PDU has many power outlet sockets which can be connected to few electrical appliances. each outlet can be indiviually controlled using the computer.
one of the company which manufacres such a PDU is APC.
